Is it time for a new role?

It’s normal to go through phases in life, especially at work. It could be that you feel less motivated, feel like you’re not on top of things, or simply aren’t enjoying it. But phases should come and go.

If they don’t, maybe it’s time to start thinking about changes you could make to make to improve your life – like finding a new job that’s more suited to you.

Afterall, we change a lot over time, and it’s quite likely a role you picked 10 years ago may not be exactly what you want to do now…

But how do I know when it’s time to start looking for a new job?

We take a look at some signs you should watch out for:

1. When Sunday evenings are filled with dread.

It’s normal to not be necessarily excited for work on a Monday because having time off to do the things you love is great. However, you should enjoy work as well not dread it - this kind of anxiety isn’t good for you.

2. You’re bored.

There’s a difference between being comfortable in your role and being incredibly bored every day. You should continue to feel challenged at work, if not you may struggle to find motivation and find yourself sat counting down the hours every day.

3. You wish you were bored!

Being too stressed can also be a massive problem. There’s a big difference between a busy role and an unachievable one. This could be caused by a variety of reasons from understaffing to expectations that are too high. A huge workload can be detrimental to the quality of your work, and to your health.

4. You don’t feel like you’re progressing...

Most people don’t want to stay in the same position doing the same thing for the rest of their life, and that’s fine! You should feel like you are learning new skills and progressing, whether this is through formal training or peer mentoring.

5. The company isn’t for you.

Company cultures can vary significantly, from the way they work to their ethical stance. If you start to disconnect with the company or find that your lifestyle doesn’t work with how they conduct business, it might be time to re-evaluate.
