International Women's Day 2020

Today is International Women’s day!

A day to celebrate the women in our lives – their achievements, their journeys and their continued fight for equality.

We love to see the women of Dutton thrive both in and out of work and are happy to support in any way we can!

Afterall, over 50% of our workforce is female – something we’re very proud to say.

We thought - what better way to celebrate International Women’s Day than find out who inspires the women of Dutton?

We asked everyone ‘Who is a woman that inspires you?’

Here are their answers:

Rachel Smith: My Grandma, Margaret. She worked through the second world war and brought up 4 boys single-handed during difficult times. She never complained, always thought of others and stayed active even at the age of 96!

Kirsty Harding: Malala Yousafzai for her work as an activist for women’s education!

Sophie O’nion: Rosa Parks, she was one of the most important people in the civil rights movement and helped bring the segregation of black people to an end.

Liz Waddington: Karren Brady because she absolutely bossed such a male-dominated world!

Tammy Dixon: Marie Curie - being a woman she wasn’t allowed to go to university, but she became a pioneering scientist whose research saved countless lives!

Karen Charlesworth: Lady Diana – a free spirit. She was honest, family was important, and she helped vulnerable people who weren’t always recognised.

Lucy Wilton: Amy Johnson- the first woman to fly solo from London to Australia. People had a lot to say at the time due to her gender, but this didn’t discourage her as she went on to fly during the Second World War. She defied gender stereotypes and norms of the 30s.

Claire Collins: Bindi Irwin- she’s carries on the amazing animal preservation work her father started at such a young age.

Tiffanie Davey: My great nan. I, unfortunately, lost her a few years ago but she never let anything get her down, had the best outlook on life and even when she was unwell, she managed to crack the best jokes.

Emma Perkins: Ruth Bader Ginsburg – She was one of the most influential women in the fight for equal rights in American law, continuously fighting for what was right despite the adversity she faced.

Kate Ryan: Betty Boothroyd – the only woman Speaker of the House of Commons – ever. And she’s still in the House of Lords at 90!

Keely Hoff: Julia Bradley. She used to be the Head Office Operations Manager and she sadly passed away in 2012. She was well respected, took everything in her stride and I learned lots from her - she certainly inspired me to follow in her footsteps!

Wendy Cracknell: Anna Freud – the celebrated psychoanalyst. Despite having a difficult childhood, having to flee her home country and suffering from mental health issues, this did not prevent her from flourishing and devoting her life to helping others.

Lauren Lambert: My sister, Vicky. She’s an amazing mum to her 2 children, never lets any issue phase her, she just gets on and gets stuff done!

Esther Hush: Katherine Johnson – An American mathematician whose calculations of orbital mechanics as a NASA employee were critical to the success of the first and subsequent US crewed space flights.

Bekki Marsh: Jojo, her lyrics tell her life story and fits mine perfectly. She’s a natural beauty and her fight through depression and mental health problems really helped me!

Liza Turucz: My mum – she never stops. She’s always on the go and is so incredibly driven!

Suzanne Davison: Emily Davison, who died at Epsom Derby trying to bring attention to women’s rights.

Danielle Crowley: Queen Elizabeth I - She shouldn’t have been in charge due to her being female, yet she went on to be one of the most recognisable female monarchs in English History!

Olivia Jackson: My mum - She’s been dealt a bad hand in life, but always comes out on top and doesn’t let it touch her!

Rachel Feeney: Maggie Thatcher, she was the first British female prime minister and she also was also a strong-headed independent lady.

Libby George: Marilyn Monroe - She makes women feel amazing in their body. She’s a very powerful, strong woman.

Vikki Callanan: Mothers, partners, sisters, daughters… friends, they are all amongst us every day. There are so many famous inspirational women we all know and are very grateful to, however, I’m truly inspired by the women around me!

Candy Bull: My mum – she’s the woman I look up to and aspire to be like daily. She spends her life making sure we’re always happy and never go without, There’s no other woman like her!

We loved reading these – some very inspirational women!

Happy International Women’s day everyone!
